Habemus Papam
Afternoon turned to evening
A bird sings
And with a puff of white smoke
from the chimney
From the Sistine Chapel,
1.2 billion of the faithful
await.
White smoke
The only connection from the
secret conclave
To the outside world –
Habemus Papam,
We welcome you, we wait.
The 226th pontiff of
the Church,
We carry on the tradition of two
thousand years,
We wait for you to wave from the
balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
A people of many nations, we
speak to you in our native tongue
Habemus Papam!
